26.10.09 Gogledd Cymru U18 v Scarlets U18

Gogledd Cymru 18s 6 Scarlets 18s 22

In spite of recording their 5th loss of this years regional age-grade competition, Gogledd Cymru put up their best display of the season so far,in this hard fought encounter.

Early on both sides struggled to come to terms with the swirling wind that seemed to have settled over Colwyn Bay Rugby Club for the afternoon, with balls being dropped and no real pattern being established to the game, and it was the young North Walians who drew first blood when Alex Schwarz slotted over a penalty and although the Scarlets replied with a try from their scrum-half Aled Davies,Schwarz put the Gogledd Cymru side ahead again with another well taken 3-pointer.

It seemed that this lead would be held until the interval but a quickly taken tap penalty as the last play of the half saw the Scarlets finally string a number of phases together, eventually allowing their massive inside centre,Rheon James,to bulldoze his way over from short-range.

If this deflated the Gogledd Cymru team, they didn't show it as led by their back-row of Ben Powlay,Owen Jones and Tom Parry they continued to harass the Scarlets at every opportunity and it was only with the introduction of their powerful substitutes that the Scarlets finally made the game safe through scores from Kirby Myhill and Llyr Morris.

Although disappointed to lose, this was a major step-forward for the Gogledd Cymru team, who probably for the first time this campaign felt that they had been able to compete throughout the entire game.

They can now look forward with renewed confidence to the final 3 games of the season.

26.10.09 Bethesda v Bala (Robert Davies Reporting)

Rugby Union – Division 2 North (N)

Bethesda 12 - Bala 13

Bethesda’s players have only themselves to blame for losing their first match this season. Indiscipline and poor decision making meant that they lost a match which was well within their compass to win.

They were 7 points down with only 2 minutes of the match gone. Indecision at the back let in Rhydian Jones for a gift of a try which was converted by Gareth Owen for the visitors.

To their credit, the home side battled back imediately and outside half Gareth Roberts slid through the Bala defence for a try which was converted by scrum half Mathew Parry.

Bethesda lost their way after a touchline incident in which the Bala hooker was involved and for a time, they gave away a number of penalties one of which was kicked by Owen to gain a slender lead for his side. On the half hour mark Bethesda were again penalised well within the Bala half but they yielded a further 10 metres by throwing the ball away giving Owen another scoring kick.

Bethesda finished the half strongly but they inexplicably refused kickable penalty opportunites by chasing the game too early and the half ended with Bala in the lead by 13 points to 7.

Bethesda seemed to be in a much better frame of mind in the second half and they dominated possession and territory. However, their handling let them down on a number of occassions and the Bala defence was very well organised.

In the last quarter, Bethesda were again on the attack in the visitors’ 22 and were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts. They spurned the opportunity to come within 3 points of Bala’s score but their attempted move came to nothing. With the end of the match looming Bethesda gained a scrum close to the Bala line and a well timed blind side move saw wing Martin Williams cross in the corner. The conversion would have given the home side a one point lead but Parry’s attempt from wide out failed.

The better side on the day lost but Bethesda could learn a lot from a Bala side that showed a lot of composure and organisation under pressure.

Both sides have now lost a match each in the league but Bethesda stay top of the section by virtue of having scored more tries than Bala.

Bethesda host Bangor University next week in the second round of the Swalec Bowl.

25.10.09 Report Provincial Gogledd Cymru West v Gogledd Cymru South

25.10.09 Report Provincial Gogledd Cymru West v Gogledd Cymru South
Sunday 25th October saw the second game of the provincial series with the South taking on the West at Bangor RFC. Despite the squads being depleted due to illness, all 3 ages showed a massive improvement from the first game against the East. The U12’s struggled against a much larger West team, but showed glimpses of their potential with tries from Blayne Robinson (Newtown) and Andrew Williams (Bro Ffestiniog). The U13 put up a heroic display, with the depleted squad playing the majority of the rugby and always looking in control during the game. They gave their all to the cause, but with the West able to bring on so many fresh players, they were able to score at the very end to make the score 26-27 to the West. The U14 continued their winning streak with a comprehensive 6 tries to 3 win against the West. They showed a massive improvement from their last game, with some great individual performances. Dewi Bowen (Newtown) and Joe Mills (Llanidloes) were back to their rampaging best while Dave Carter (Harlech) looked lethal every time he had the ball.

Next Sunday see’s the U14 take on the best in Wales at the National U14’s 10’s Tournament at Abercynon, but they can travel with plenty of confidence.

21.10.09 GOGS U18 v Scarlets U18 - Colwyn Bay Rugby Club 25.10.09

This Sunday sees Gogledd Cymru Under 18s 3rd home match of the season as they take on the Scarlets at Colwyn Bay Rugby Club. 2:00pm KO.

It has been a difficult and at times frustrating campaign for the young North Walians and their coaches as they have fielded a different 22 man squad for every match, and this lack of consistency has been reflected in their performances which have been similarly varied.

Their last match at home to the Dragons, was in many ways their most disappointing performance yet,and they will be looking to put that game behind them and put on a much improved performance against their West Walian opposition.

The 2 sides have already met,at the end of August,in the opening match of the Championship, and although the Scarlets ran out convincing winners it is not unrealistic to believe that on this occasion it will be a much closer affair.

20.10.09 Newtown v COBRA Match Report (17.10.09)

Saturday 17th October 2009
Newtown 3-34 COBRA

COBRA secured a bonus point win with a strong all round performance in a fiercely contested local derby.

Newtown held the upper hand for the first quarter of the game dominating possession and territory but were not able to break down the strong COBRA defence. A break from their own 22 by COBRA No.8 Alun Jones relieved the pressure and forced Newtown to concede a Penalty. Centre Tom Ryder stepped up and slotted the kick to give COBRA a 0-3 lead. Newtown quickly levelled the scores with a Penalty from Outside Half Rowan Meek after the COBRA defensive line were caught offside.

COBRA took control of the game and scored the games first try after another break upfield by Jones allowed time and space for flanker Aled Davies to score unopposed in the corner. Ryder converted neatly to give COBRA a 3-10 lead. A further Ryder Penalty soon after stretched the lead to 10 points. COBRA were by now well in the ascendency and scored a second try on the stroke of half time. COBRA were awarded a penalty in front of the Newtown posts and whilst most players were expecting the kick for goal, scrum half Iwan Vaughan took a quick tap and forced his way over the line. Ryder added the conversion to give COBRA a 3-20 halftime lead.

The early period of the second half was scrappy with both sides having players yellow carded. With 20 minutes remaining COBRA scored their 3rd try from a unstoppable forward drive from a 5metre lineout, with No.8 Alun Jones the recipient of the score. Ryder continued his excellent day with the boot to converted from wide out. COBRA squandered several chances in pursuit of the fourth try, and were guilty of trying to force offloads from impossible situations. With the chances of a bonus point seemingly gone, man of the match Aled Davies sold a dummy to split the Newtown defence, he raced through the gap to score in the final minute of the game. Ryder converted to finish the game and cap an excellent team performance.

19.10.09 Rhyl v Bethesda (Robert Davies Reporting)

Rhyl 10 Bathesda 18 This was a much awaited clash between much improved Rhyl and top of the league Bethesda and the game was in the balance till the 77 minute. The home side started the strongest and Bethesda were encamped for long periods defending their try line and 2 kickable penalties in the first quarter were missed by Rhyl. Stern defence gave Bethesda confidence and the visitors began to make inroads to Rhyl’s half of the field and on one of these occasions Bethesda took the lead from a Mathew Parry penalty. The firt try of the game came from flanker Dylan Hughes beating 3 defenders to ground the ball. Bethesda’s 8 had the advantage in the set pieces but the home side were good on the pickup and drive their backs were also dangerous on attack. Half time and Bethesda held a slender lead of 8-0. Bethesda were now playing down the slight slope but again Rhyl took the game to Bethesda and from their most effective game plan of short run’s and support they breached Bethesda’s line for a 5 point score. Parry increased Bethesda’s lead with a penalty, but again Rhyl’s forwards laid the foundation from increased pressure and battering of Bethesda’s line they decided to go wide with slick hands and dummy runners crossed for a well constructed try in the corner and a missed conversion that could have put them ahead. Both sides contributed to a pulsating contest the game was finely poised hinging on one point for 15 minutes. Bethesda’s edge edge in the scrum became their savoir when they put in one final effort and pushed the home side over for No 8 James Roberts to touch down, An excellent conversion from Parry put Bethesda two scores ahead and secured the victory. An excellent contest and well refereed and a good advert for Division 3 North.

Bethesda Seconds secured a win against Llangoed with Llifon jones Kevin Ogwen Dylan Williams Franco Guver And newly married Iwan Howel scoring tries and 2 conversions and a penalty by Lee Dixon, Henry Jacobs scoring a hat trick of tries for

Llangoed and a solitary conversion by Owain Humphreys.

Robert Davies

Chairman expressed a disappointment at the number of representatives present

Academy
Will informed the meeting that the U18 squad had played 4 and lost 4.
Some good performances in patches. The physique of the opposition is proving to be the deciding factor
The U18 is quite a “young” side with many available again next year.
Once again the open door policy was mentioned .Clubs to nominate to Will
The Academy wish to thank the clubs for their continued support re. the availability of their players.
Clubs asked for early announcements of the 22 players so that others could be included in any friendlies arranged.
If the clubs have very good players older than the U18 cut off date would they please inform Will so that he can pass it on to John Oakden who could “look” at them in the U20 set up.
The U 20s would look to try and fix games on the Friendly weekends of the league so that the league team of a club would not be further drawn upon.

Referees
Mervyn Picton informed the meeting of the continued need to search for more Level 2 refs. Within the club structures,as the postponement of games was a real possibility
League & Cup
Emrys, the chairman asked the clubs to each give a broad overview of the club scene re games played etc.
The Provincial Leagues are going well in the early stages. It was emphasised by some clubs that friendlies were essential to keep the players on board. It is up to the clubs to look for these fixtures within our set up (or cross border)
Austin willing to continue to support via the Pool system in place i.e. if you are looking for on certain dates and venues and times fixtures e mail Austin who will pass on to all clubs
Great concern was expressed about clubs looking to re arrange fixtures to Friday nights SO THAT THEIR PLAYERS COULD PLAY FOR THE SECOND XV ON A SATURDAY!!!!
Austin to research
All delegates were led through the end of season commitments to sort out the champions and the Cup details
Delegates were asked to look for sponsors for the new Plate and Bowl competitions
The end of season run in demands the completion of Provincial leagues so clubs were asked to ensure wherever possible fixtures are fulfilled on time and any un played games be completed as soon as possible.

Webb Ellis Cup
The delegates supported a proposal to support the teams involved in National Cups
The teams are supported by the WRU for a party of 26 to travel by coach , stay overnight and have a meal on the way.
North Wales Youth will subsidise this at £100 per away game

10.10.09 Aberaeron v BETHESDA

Aberaeron 18 Bethesda 23

Bethesda made the 3 hour journey to unbeaten Division 5 side Aberaeron in the new format of the Swalec Cup. Bethesda will this year be playing in the Swalec Bowl. The game started disastrously for the visitors when in the first minute a sliced clearance kick fell generously in the lap of centre Aled Sweeny who crossed the line untouched converted by Dylan Evans 7-0 A few minutes later Parry failed to reduce the arrears with a penalty. Bethesda held the territorial advantage but the home side looked dangerous on the break. Flanker Dylan Hughes brought Bethesda back in the game with a fine solo try when he weaved his way to the try line beating a number of defenders in his wake, conversion failed 7-5 On 22 minutes Aber again breached Bethesda’s line again taking advantage of Bethesda’s sloppy play for a try. 3 minutes later they increased the lead to 15-5 with a penalty from Dylan Evans. This was not the Bethesda that we are used to watch this season and things got worse when Parry was Yellow carded for 10 minutes. With half time looming Aberaeron increased their lead to 18-5 with another penalty by Evans. Williams missed a penalty on half time for Bethesda . Whatever was said at half time worked in only the second minute a break at the back of the scrum by James Roberts Steven Roberts made inroads and inter passed with Dylan Hughes for his second try converted by Edwards. Bethesda were back in it with a 6 point deficit. Parry came back on and a positional switch was made and Bethesda looked like the team of old and completely took control Wing Gwyn Hughes got his usual try from a strong run to touch down conversion failed and Bethesda were within a point. In the 18 minute of second half Parry put Bethesda in the lead for the first time with a penalty and on 25 minutes increased the lead with another 3 points. Aberaeron in the last 15 minutes thru all caution to the wind and attacked from everywhere Gareth Edwards was prominent in defence and it showed thru all the team till the final whistle Young Huw Williams came thru a challenging game in second row and also Gareth Ogwen and Sion Doyle came on as subs and showed promise for the future. Final Score Aberaeron 18 Bethesda 23 Next week Rhyl away and Bethesda 2nds home to Llangoed.

10.10.09 Colwyn Bay v Ruthin

As in previous matches this season Ruthin started well away at Colwyn Bay but were not able to capitalise on their strong forward play. First points opportunity went to the Bay with a penalty goal kick which went wide. Shortly afterwards the home side’s no 8 was sin-binned and from the resulting penalty fly half Jamie Morris put Ruthin 3 points ahead. Although spending a lot of time in the Bay’s 22 Ruthin were unable to capitalise on being a man up and it was the home side that equalised with a penalty goal from Adam Hughes after 30 minutes. It was the Bay’s turn to apply pressure and were awarded a series of penalties in Ruthin’s 22 one of which resulted in second row Dwayne Speakman being yellow carded. Finally scrum half Wil Davies cleared and Ruthin went back on the attack. Flanker John Meldrum, who had a great game, drove over the Bay’s line for a try which centre Adam Robson converted putting Ruthin 10-3 ahead when the whistle blew for half time. After the break Ruthin missed the opportunity to go further ahead with a sliced attempt at a penalty goal and it was the Bay’s Adam Hughes who reduced the arrears to 10-9 with two successful penalty goal attempts. A period of great Ruthin pressure followed with the ball going over the home side’s line twice but being judged to have been held up and finally after good defence by the Bay they cleared the ball. Ruthin were awarded a penalty in the last moments of the match and Robson put the ball over to make the final score 13-9 to the visitors. This was a scrappy match but Ruthin will be pleased to have gained their first away win of the season with a number of key players missing.

11.10.09 Gogledd Cymru U18s v Dragons U18s

GC 18's 0 NEWPORT/GWENT DRAGONS 36

Gogledd Cymru Under 18s left the field at the end of the game desperately disappointed in a second-half performance which had allowed an enthusiastic Dragons side to run out the comfortable winners of this 4th round match in the Welsh Regional Age-Grade Championship.

At half-time the Dragons had led 10-0,through a Sion Jones try converted by Mathew O'Brien who had also slotted over a penalty, but the Gogledd Cymru side were very much in the contest throughout, and in fact if it had not been for their own continued ill-discipline at the breakdown,it might have been they and not the Dragons who had finished the half in the lead.

However what hopes they had of turning the game round were soon dashed as within the first 5 minutes of the second half, first Kyle Tayler and then Leon Burgess crossed the white-wash for the Dragons. The latter's try which was run in from within his own half seemed to break the young North Walian's hearts and from then the game was over as a contest. Further tries from Jones (again) and substiute scrum-half JB Bruzulier, only re-inforced this fact.

Although there were individual performances of note, most principally,Tom Parry,Henry Roberts and Owain Aled the team as a whole knew that they had let slip the chance of a first victory in this seasons competition.

Gogledd Cymru Under 18s next game is at home to the Scarlets on 25th October.

06.10.09 Gogledd Cymru u 20s 24 pts York University 8 pts

Gogledd Cymru u 20s   24 pts  York University 8 pts

An excellent performance by the Young Gogs, still not at full strength, shook the students at Eirias Park on Sunday.  York had won all of their league games last season and gained promotion to the North One division alongside Liverpool University who had narrowly lost to the Gogledd Cymru senior side the week before.

The students looked good for the first ten minutes but the hard working home pack began to grind them down and force their side forward. From third phase possession, Mike Oakden picked up and charged forward before off loading to Joe Sproston who timed a fine pass out to Mike Hall. The man of the match hooker crashed into the defence and crossed the line to score.  Carwyn Milburn, playing at full back, kicked a fine conversion.  Within five minutes, the students found a gap in the home defence and scored a try out wide but the conversion was missed and the Gogs remained ahead. The home forwards then produced a sustained period of pressure and the irrepressible Nathan Roberts picked up from a scrum and brutalised his was over in the corner. Milburn again converted from the touchline.  The period up to half time was evenly matched until a yellow card was shown to Anthony Tilley for not using arms in the tackle. The students kicked the penalty from this offence and it looked like the home side might suffer for Tilley’s indiscretion but his team mates rallied and held out until the break leading 14 - 8.

There followed a stalemate for almost half an hour until a penalty by Milburn put the Under twenties side beyond a score ahead. This was a cue for the Gogs to cut loose and fine runs from Paul Selwood, Adam Price and Dave Jenkins threatened their opponents line. Kriss Wilkes then showed his class and cut through the tiring visitors defence to score under the posts. The full back rounded off affine all round game with yet another conversion. The students gave their all in the dying stages but the back row led by captain Dale Blackmore with Tilley and Roberts tackled everything and locks Aaron Organ and Matt Banks ensured that any holes were blocked.  Scrum half Wil Davies gave way for Craig Horseman to make an impressive debut and Mike Oakden stood aside for Sean Aaron Jones to show what future talent there is in the region. An injury to stand off Jamie Morris meant that Wil Davies was back on the park at ten but the side kept their shape. With just a minute to go Nathan Roberts suffered an horrific break to his leg and an ambulance had to be called.  The game could not continue and was called no side.  Nathan was taken to Glan Clwyd where he had an immediate operation.  Monday morning saw him sitting up smiling and joking about his injury, amazing both staff and visitors with his spirit.    Many thanks to Physio “Princess” Leah, Jimmy Waring and the ambulance staff for their kindness and professional actions.

06.10.09 Gogledd Cymru South v Gogledd Cymru East

The first ever Provincial Games took place in Cobra on Sunday 27th September, when Gogledd Cymru South took on Gogledd Cymru East. The day was a great success with approximately 200 players taking part in the three ages of U12’s, U13’s and U14’s. All games were extremely competitive with the East just edging it at U12’s and U13’s, but the South getting the better at U14’s.

Big Thanks to players, parents, coaches and COBRA for all their support.

Looking forward to Gogledd Cymru South v Gogledd Cymru West at Bangor RFC on Sunday 25th October.

04.10.09 Bethesda 29 Wrexham 6

04.10.09 Bethesda 29 Wrexham 6

Wrexham were the visitors to Dol Dafydd on Saturday and it was the visitors that started the strongest putting Bethesda under pressure but a spilled ball gave Bethesda possession deep in their own half an excellent pick up and a strong run saw an excellent pass put flanker Arwyn Griffiths in space to sprint in under the post from 40 meters conversion by Parry. Wrexham were soon back in the game a minute later reduced the arrears with a penalty. The Bethesda scrum was solid and gave the visiting pack a torrid time. There was no more scoring till the34 minute when Wrexham reduced the arrears further with another penalty to make the score 7 points to 6. From more scrum pressure No 8 James Roberts touched down Half Time Bethesda 12 Wrexham 6. Mathew Parry operating from No9 in his first game for a month broke on the blind and thru a perfect dummy to score an excellent try. Wing Gareth Edwards was next to touch down when he collected a difficult pass to score. He repeated the feat with 5 minutes to go this time making the conversion easier for Parry. A satisfactory result and for the second week kept their defensive line intact. The next 3 weeks will not be so easy with an away trip to Aberaeron this Saturday them away to Rhyl and home to Bala before the break for the autumn internationals.
