29.11.09 Bethesda go through Robert Davies reporting

Bethesda 22 Rhyl 18 (Bethesda go through)  North Wales Senior Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg. The fourth and last encounter between these two teams was probably the hardest one, it was total commitment from both teams and the game went to the wire. Rhyl started the strongest and not for the first time this season took the lead when they opened up Bethesda to score under the post when a loose ball fell in their favour and scrum half Rob Jones touched down converted by Wick Friz. Bethesda responded to the challenge and had Rhyl defending vigorously. It took 13 minutes for Bethesda to register a score and it came thru Mathew Parry’s boot with a penalty. Numerous scoring chances were squandered by the home side. On 23 minutes Late replacement Prop Lee Sherlock touched down in the corner to put Bethesda in the lead for the first time and all this was due to Bethesda dominance in the pack On 29 minutes Parry increased the lead with another penalty but Rhyl would not lie down and their counter attacking kept the crowed on their toes. Bethesda took a slender lead to half time of 11-7. With nothing to lose Rhyl were going to give it their all and ran the ball at the home side on every occasion but parry stemmed the flow with another penalty but Rhyl hit back with a penalty of their own. Bethesda’s dominance in the scrum paid off after Dylan Williams who had an excellent game touched down to register a push over try. Bethesda’s lead of 19-10 should have seen them home after another penalty by Parry increased the lead. Rhyl were not finished and four the last half hour the attackers turned defenders and this time it was the home side’s turn to stem the flow. On the hour mark they scored a good try after strong running by their forwards and back’s for Flanker Simon Davies to touch down wide conversion missed. Still applying pressure Rhyl came within striking distance with another penalty 22-18. Ill discipline was creeping into the game frequently in the final 10 minutes with Bethesda hanging on Rhyl were still on the charge and pounding the line Dylan Hughes claimed possession and when trying to run out of defence he was tackled in the in goal area, and for no apparent reason a scuffle broke out and unluckily it was two Rhyl players that had an early shower. A very exiting mid week game that was well attended but both sides will not want to play each other again for a while. Bethesda’s next game is at Bangor on the 5th of December.

North Wales duo George North and Rhodri Jones prepare to face Australia for Wales U18s

Nov 26 2009 by Rob Griffiths, Daily Post

WALES under-18 coach Simon King has named a strong squad to face Australia schools a week on Saturday, and will be hoping for some local knowledge to help his side through from two North Wales juniors.
The Welsh side entertain their Wallabies counterparts at Eirias Park on Saturday, December 5 (6pm kick off), and has named Pwllheli prop Rhodri Jones and Rhyl youth product George North among his experienced 26-man squad.
The majority of the selected players were involved in the side last season with only four players, Cory Hill, Joseff Griffin, Callum Thomas and Harry Robinson (all Blues academy) hoping to get their first cap at this level.
King said: “It’s a great opportunity for all of us to be able to play against a national southern hemisphere side.
“As with the senior side, the more regular contact we have with these teams, the better. When these players come up against the same players at a later stage, they will be more confident having already met them.
“We are looking forward to playing at Parc Eirias. A number of players have come through our side from North Wales in recent years, such as James King and Joel Galley and it is important other young players from the region are able to watch top quality rugby and aspire to follow in those players’ footsteps.
“George North and Rhodri Jones played well for us last season having come through the North Wales U16 set-up. They have shown a great deal of commitment so far in their rugby careers in travelling to training and moving to Llandovery College and I’m sure they will relish the chance to play in front of a North Wales crowd. Their development shows the good work being done in North Wales.”
And King believes Wales have every chance against the touring side, adding: “It’s a great one-off challenge.
“We competed well with an outstanding England side that put 40 points on South Africa last season and the Premiership experience gained by the majority of our players this season will have prepared them well for this game.”
The game will be the Australians’ third match of a seven-match tour of the UK and Ireland which kicks-off in Dublin on Friday (27 November) against Irish Schools and ends with a Test against England U18 on Saturday, December 19.
An Australian Schools side, together with all three Ella brothers, played a North Wales side in Llandudno in 1977, winning 66-0.
King will name his team next Thursday before travelling to Colwyn Bay for the match on Saturday.
Tickets for Wales U18 v Australia Schools XV are £7 for adults and £2 for Under 16s in the Grandstand and £5 for adults and free entry for Under 16s in the Terrace. Tickets are on sale at Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre and through Venue Cymru – www.venuecymru.co.uk and by calling 01492 872000.

25.11.09 GC U16s PREVIEW Sunday 29 Nov 2009

Gogledd Cymru Under 16s face the long journey down to South Wales for the second time in less than a week when they travel down to Abercynon RFC to face Cardiff Blues North on Sunday.

The reverse fixture played earlier in the season at Eirias Parc saw the young North Walians score their first, and so far only, win of the current campaign with a 34-24 victory that was actually more clear cut than the final score might suggest.

However that elusive second victory won't be easily achieved against a Blues side that has in recent weeks achieved narrow victories against both the Dragons and Ospreys and which will be more than keen to avoid being beaten again by the Gogledd Cymru side.

24.11,09 YOGI's Autobiography -Mewn Deg Eiliad-launch

Paralysed North Wales rugby player writes book

Nov 24 2009 by Hywel Trewyn, Daily Post
A PARALYSED rugby player’s emotional and powerful autobiography details his horrific injuries when a scrum collapsed. The “crack” Bryan Davies, 51, from Bala, suffered playing hooker in his final game against Nant Conwy left him paralysed – without any feeling from the neck down.
Now the brave father of two tells of his painful road back in a new book, Yogi – Mewn Deg Eiliad (In ten seconds) written in Welsh by Elfyn Pritchard.
Bryan said: “While my left shoulder was being raised by the prop my right shoulder was being raised by the hooker, and my head was stuck, down by my legs.
“I heard a crack like the crack of a 12-bore gun and I knew that second I had broken my neck.”
Family, friends and rugby fans across Wales raised over £200,000 for an extension to his home including a wheelchair lift, ramps and hoists.
Bryan, known as Yogi, relies on a ventilator to speak, pumping oxygen through his windpipe after his lungs were damaged.
The accident happened just days after Bryan, his policewoman wife Susan and two children Ilan and Teleri had returned from a holiday in the Caribbean. The book which uses rugby expressions in its different sections moves from Bryan’s memories before and after the accident interspersed with Susan’s. Ilan and Teleri also contribute.
Born in Corwen, Bryan’s family moved to Llangwyfan, near Ruthin and he attended Ysgol Brynhyfryd, but still had Bala’s YYB logo on his uniform. His new schoolmates said it was Ysgol Yogi Bear and it stuck.
After the accident, Bryan talks of suffering pain, spasms, nightmares and depressions both during his 18 months at Southport Hospital and at home and how his hard upbringing helped him fight for his life.
And Bryan describes finally returning to his home in Bala which had to specially adapted for his needs.
He said: “I felt lost and tears flowed down my face. I saw the stairs and thought how many times I’d run up them. I thought I’ll never do that again.
“That’s when the situation hit me worst. I felt empty and didn’t recognise the place. People around me said: ‘You’re all right now, you’re home.’ But I wasn’t all right.
“I sometimes think it would be much less of a strain for Susan and the children if I died. But they are the main reason for living as well, them, the rest of the family and friends.”
Bryan is trying to be positive and hopes a new 4x4 wheelchair will enable him to gain more independence.
The book, published by Lolfa, will be launched at Plas Coch Hotel, Bala

22.11.09 Ospreys U18 v Gogledd Cymru U18 Will Morcombe Reports

Ospreys Under 18 34 Gogledd Cymru Under 18 0

At a wet and windy Llandarcy, both sides strived hard to put on an entertaining show for those spectators who braved the blustery conditions, and although the Ospreys ran out convincing winners, the Gogledd Cymru side contributed fully throughout. This in spite of falling 12 points behind in as many minutes when first Eli Walker powered his way over from 30 metres out and then the Ospreys scrum-half ran half the length of the field to outpace the North Walian cover defence.

At this point it would have been all too easy for the visitors heads to drop, but to their credit the opposite was the case as their pack, and in particular Chris Holmes,JJ Williams and Gareth Morgan started to compete with their South Walian counterparts, with some measure of parity being established at the breakdowns, and although the Ospreys added a further try from Walker just before half-time this combativeness was maintained for the rest of the game.

Unfortunately what possession that the pack did gain was nearly all very slow allowing the well-organised Ospreys defence to re-organise and comfortably stifle out any attacking threat that they may have posed. They on the other hand continued to look dangerous whenever they did have possession allowing a further 3 tries to be scored.

Gogledd Cymru Under 18s next game is at home to Cardiff Blues on 13th December at Colwyn Bay RFC. KO 2pm

Davies picked up the injury during training at the Welsh Rugby Union National Centre of Excellence on Tuesday and he will be replaced on the bench on match day by Ospreys forward Jonathan Thomas.

19.11.09 Daily Post on N Wales Cup Comp

New North WalesCup format sees mixed reactions

Nov 19 2009 by Rob Griffiths, Daily Post

A NEW format to the North Wales Cup has been introduced this season, and has brought with it a mixed bag of reaction from coaches.
For the first time the first round of the cup will be played with home and away matches, with the winners of the tie being decided by an aggregate scoreline.
Clubs have until November 28 to fit the first round of the cup into their schedule, and are able to use the autumn international series as free weekends from league action to accommodate the ties.
However, Caernarfon head coach Ieuan Jones has greeted the competition with scepticism.

“We’ve spoken about the physicality of the game,” said Jones.
“While I’m not in favour of having a whole month off in November, I think all the clubs were looking forward to a break.
“I saw Elwyn (Williams Nant Conwy head coach) saying they were missing a lot of players, and we are in the same position, we’ve got five or six out at the moment.
“Having a break would have been nice to just be able to regroup and be able to bring a few players back in.”

Caernarfon travelled to Llandudno for their first leg tie at the end of October only three weeks after putting 81 points on the same opponents in the league.
And Jones added: “We played Llandudno only a few weeks earlier and won 81 something.
“I felt for their coach John Davies at the time because they had no front-row and finished with only 13 players, so I am sure this is a game they don’t need either.
“You have to have a cup competition, but I’m not sure if this home and away is the best way forward.”
Instead, Jones suggested Division One teams should be drawn away at Division Two sides.
He said: “Why not? It is only one game then and gives the Division Two sides the advantage.
“You play against sides you haven’t done for a long time, or if at all, and just changes things up a little bit.”

Llangefni coach Dewi Redvers Jones admits it is not ideal. But having seen his side knocked out in the first round of the Swalec Plate, admits they won’t be overly affected by the new format.
“I think it’s been done this way to make up for the fact that there’s only 10 teams in Division One this season,” said Redvers Jones.
“We went out of the Swalec Plate in the first round, so without the North Wales Cup we would be without a fixture for virtually the whole of November, and that would make it harder for us going back into league action next month.
“It’s difficult for us to organise games in November anyway, and we are often short on numbers because players think we haven’t got a game there’s not point training – and it can affect our selection.
“But the North Wales Cup is an important competition, and I think it is going to affect those teams that are pushing for the league and are also in the Plate as well.”

For Bethesda it could ensure a fixture pile up, but coach Will Sanderson is relishing a shot at silverware on three fronts.
Bethesda are looking odds on to finish top of Division Two North (Northern) and qualify for the secondary league after Christmas, whereby the winners will gain automatic promotion to Division One North.
They are also in the last 32 of the Swalec Bowl (third tier national competition) and hold a three point first leg advantage over Rhyl in the North Wales Cup.
Sanderson said: “I’m a great believer that success breeds success. It’s swings and roundabouts really.
“I can see why some clubs would not favour it, because it is another game you have to play, but for our part we want to play these games and we want to win these games and indeed win every game we play in.”
North Wales Rugby Council competition secretary Dai Davies defended the new format saying it has been put out to consultation with the clubs before the season began.
He said: “The WRU last season had the Cup, Plate and Bowl and if you dropped out of the Cup then you went into the Plate and if you dropped out of that then you went into the Bowl, so there was more chance of playing more games last season.
“We had meetings with club representatives and a lot of them suggested because of a lack of fixtures that we could come up with something, so we decided on making the competition home and away.
“This was one idea which we came up with, we put to the clubs and was approved. It is not set in stone that we have to stay with it next year. As I’ve always said, if people at the clubs are not happy with it then at the end of the season we’ll look at it again and may make some alterations.”
Davies added: “The other reason we did this was because the treasurers of the clubs were complaining during the international breaks that there was nothing coming in to the clubs, for example over the bars. This is another fixture and gives clubs the chance to make a bit of money from it as well.”

PREVIEW GOGS U16s and U18s Sunday November 22, 2009

Both GC 16s and 18s are, weather permitting,in action this Sunday again, both away to the Neath/Swansea Ospreys.

The 18s who are still winless, will be looking to build upon their much improved performance in their last game against the Scarlets. However it will not be easy against an Ospreys side which although it has only won 2 of its 6 fixtures in this seasons regional age-grade Championship, defeated the Gogledd Cymru side 37-12 in the reverse fixture played at Colwyn Bay earlier in the season and which still has a chance of qualifying for the final of the Competition.

Due to the foibles of the fixture list in the Under 16 Age-Grade Competition,Gogledd Cymru 16s face their Ospreys counterparts both home and away in their next 2 fixtures and so Sundays match will in fact be the first time that the 2 sides have faced each other this season. Although the Gogledd Cymru side have only won 1 match this season,so their hosts have only won 2 and as such Sundays match provides a real opportunity for them to come away from South Wales with a second victory of the campaign.

14.11.09 Match Report Cobra v Rhuthun

Ruthin started the second leg of this North Wales Cup game at COBRA 10 points up from the first leg.  The Blues were playing with a strong wind behind them and after dominating the first period of the game went ahead with a try by scrum half Wil Davies.  Ruthin had the majority of possession and territory and the home team were conceding penalties in their attempts to keep Ruthin away from the try line.  Ruthin’s back row were playing well with a particularly good performance from No 8 Marc Lloyd.   Fly half Adam Robson kicked two penalty goals and at half time Ruthin were 11-0 ahead.  After the break Ruthin continued aggressively for the first few minutes and this led to a try by wing Huw Parry which was not converted.  Although 26 points behind on aggregate COBRA were still playing with purpose and after about 15 minutes into the second half scored a pushover try which they converted.  The last twenty minutes of the game was a bit of a dog fight in the middle of the park with Ruthin defending well against the COBRA attack.  The game ended with no further score at 16-7 to Ruthin and 31-12 on aggregate.  This was a controlled Ruthin performance against a good COBRA side.

COBRA will start with a 10 point deficit this Saturday (14 November) in the 2nd leg of their cup tie against Ruthin. COBRA contained Ruthin in wet conditions despite fielding an inexperienced side missing a number of regular players in the backline. COBRA lacked fluidity in their play but made up for it with a committed defensive display which frustrated their opponents.

After an even start Ruthin took the lead after 15 minutes with a penalty goal put over by their fly half Adam Robson. Midway thorough the half Robson collected his own chip ahead and sent a long pass to wing Huw Parry who broke clear for a try. The first half finished with Ruthin 8-0 ahead. Ruthin resumed the attack immediately after the break and after a series of scrums full back Gethin Hughes broke through the defence for a try which Robson converted. At 15-0 down COBRA went on the attack and for  20 minutes continually applied pressure on the Ruthin line. Eventually the pressure told as prop Andy Evans drove over for a deserved try. Outside half Rhodri Davies narrowly failed to convert leaving the final scoreline 15-5.

05.11.09 Three now becomes FIVE! GOGS making it big!

Yesterday's BLOG should have read Andy Fenby not Ferriby.

I see that the Ospreys as well as having James King in their squad to play Northampton tonight also have Cai Griffiths starting.

That means 5 North Walians playing regional Rugby this weekend.

05.11.09 Ruthin vs Cobra

05.11.09 Ruthin vs Cobra

Following reverses in the league Ruthin were looking to start a good cup run in the first of two legs in the North Wales Cup against mid-Wales side COBRA. The game started in torrential rain but Ruthin signalled their intention with some good attacking play leading to a penalty goal put over by fly half Adam Robson after 15 minutes of play. 5 minutes later Robson, after a beautiful chip and collect across field, passed to wing Huw Parry who raced down the wing for a fine try. Ruthin were playing good attacking rugby with full back Gethin Hughes and No 8 John Meldrum scything through the COBRA midfield on occasions. However a plucky COBRA defence combined with some handling errors with the wet ball kept Ruthin out and the first half finished with Ruthin 8-0 ahead. Ruthin resumed the attack immediately after the break and after a series of scrums Hughes cut through the defence for a try which Robson converted. At 15-0 down COBRA went on the attack and for the next 20 minutes Ruthin led by skipper Joe Palmer defended well against spirited COBRA play. Eventually the pressure was too much and COBRA drove over for a fine and deserved try which they failed to convert. Ruthin went back on the attack but COBRA’s defence held again and the match finished with the score 15-5 to Ruthin. Ruthin will be pleased with this performance against a competent sideand will be looking forward to the away leg at COBRA on November 14th.
