AT Ruthin they’re justifiably proud of their Welsh international prop Eifion Lewis-Roberts – and now they’re getting excited about his brother.

But unlike the giant Sale Sharks front-row, Sion Roberts is a winger – albeit a powerful hard-running one.

He’s a few stone lighter than elder brother Eifion but also a few yards quicker. He’s strong too and he showed both qualities in scoring two fine tries as Ruthin earned a hard-fought bonus point win over a dogged Llangefni side at Cae Ddol.

The Blues certainly began with a bang with their rampaging back-row of Clwyd Jones, Jon Meldrum and Lee Pope leading the charge and Llangefni were at full stretch.

Scrum-half Will Davies missed a penalty but the pressure told after 20 minutes when centre Gethin Hughes crossed under the posts with Davies converting.

Ruthin doubled their lead from a lineout, Chris Lewis’ catch followed by a drive over the line by hooker Gary Teeson with Davies converting handsomely.

Slick handling by Ruthin’s backs carved out space for right wing Roberts and his pace and power did the rest with Davies again converting.

Llangefni rallied as No8 Iestyn Dafydd galvanised them with some charging runs and right on half time a series of drives saw prop Sion Arron crash over.

This sparked a bust-up which saw Ruthin lose back-row forwards Clwyd Jones and Lee Pope to the sin bin with Llangafni’s Mark Pritchard also yellow carded.

It also took the wind out of Ruthin’s sails as the second half started with Llangefni 21-5 down and battering away but it was 25 minutes into the half before prop Iwan Evans smashed over on the blind side.

The visitors threatened a comeback but handling errors cost them dear and when left wing Huw Parry pounced on a dropped pass, Ruthin moved the ball right where Sion Roberts thundered over with Davies adding another well-struck conversion.

Cefni boss Dewi Redvers Jones was left with a frustrated feeling at the end, saying: “From our point of view it wasn’t a great performance. Last year we did struggle at times, and while we thought we had a really good pre-season this time, we are still making far too many unforced errors.

“We allowed Ruthin to control the game for too long in the first half, and while we did come back at them in the second, you can’t gives sides like Ruthin a 21-0 head start.

“There are still some positives to come from the game because we did well when we kept hold of the ball and we came back at them well, but we have just got to cut these mistakes out of our game.”

RGC 1404 Under 18s produced the biggest shock of this years regional age-grade competition as they gained their first win of this season's campaign against the previously unbeaten Scarlets Under 18s at Bynia RFC.

When Scarlets stand-off Nick Setaro crossed after only 5 minutes the large contingent of North Wales supporters who had made the journey to South-West Wales must have feared the worst. However building upon the much improved performance in their previous game against the Dragons 2 weeks ago, the RGC team instead started taking the game to the home side and a combination of a well organised defence in which Meilir Parry and James Grundy were outstanding and a greater incisiveness in attack led to 2 tries for them. The first scored by Mike Jones came following a bullocking run from second-row Llew Williams, the second after quick-thinking from right-wing Jason Blackmore, who having made an interception and realising he did not have the pace to go half the length of the field instead kicked the ball down field and the race to the line was won by stand-off Lewis Barker. Both tries being converted by Dion Jones.Although Scarlets hooker Simon O'Leary pulled a try back just before half-time , it was the RGC side who led at the interval by 2 points.

As expected the second-half saw the Scarlets come with all guns blazing and they were soon rewarded with second row Curtis Morris crossing the whitewash, Setaro adding the extras to give them a 5 point lead. Again however if anyone thought this would lead to a collapse from the young North Walians, they were to be mistaken as the same combination of aggressive and organised defence and structured and controlled attack that had been so evident in the first-half was maintained,and they were rewarded for their patience with 2 succesful penalties from the boot of Jones to reclaim the lead. It was a lead that was to last until less than 2 minutes from the end when the Scarlets following a period of sustained pressure close to the RGC line were awarded a penalty which was converted by theleading points scorer in this years competition, Jordan Williams who had come on to replace Setaro. However the drama was not over yet as from the re-start the Scarlets were penalised at the breakdown and showing nerves of steel full-back Jones calmly slotted over the penalty from close to the touchline with the final act of the game to give the RGC side a famous victory. Not only was it their first win in this years competition but it was the first victory that an RGC 1404 Under 18 side had achieved since entering the competition back in 2008.

For a side that lost its first 2 games this year by a collective margin of over 120 points this was a tremendous turnaround and all credit must go both to the players and coaches. THE RGC 1404 side now have a 6 week break until their next match in the competition when they will face the Blues at Eirias Parc on October 24th.'

Nant went ahead in the 1st minute of the natch by virtue of a successful penalty by Ifan. Pwllheli replied after 10 minutes in a similar manner – Gethin Robers being the scorer. Two minutes later a strong drive by the Nant pack resulted in Eryl the Hooker touching down for a try that was converted by Ifan. This was followed 4 minutes later with another successful penalty by Ifan. Nant were controlling the first half but were penalised by Roberts gain after 4 minutes.

A score of 6 – 13 at half time.

Pwllheli became more forceful during the second half and Huw Williams scored a try for them after 5 minutes. Another 2 successful penalties by Roberts for Pwllheli made the score 17 – 13 after 22 minutes which remained until 80 minutes had been played. Nant withheld strong pressure from Pwllheli and then, matters changed completely during the extra time (9 and a half minutes in total allowed by the referee. Pwllheli committed 9 fouls during this extra period but 3 points would be unsufficient for Nant. At the very last moment of the game, Trystan managed to squeeze over for a try in the left hand corner to win the match for Nant. A sigh of relief for Nant and a huge disappointment for Pwllheli.

It is a cliché by now that ‘it is points scored that wins matches’. That was certainly true today as Nant failed with four penalty attemps as Caernarfon were successful with their four attempts.

A score of 8 -20 at half time, Nant’s scores being a penlty by Carwyn ap Myrddin and an unconverted try by him as well. Caernarfon’s points came from tries by Rhodri Owen and Dylan Gwyn both converted by Kelvin Morris as well as two successful penalty kicks by Kelvin.

Nant became more forceful during the second half and Carwyn Ellis scored two tries, the second of which was converted by Ifan Jones. Caernarfon had another two penalties successfully converted by Kelvin again.

This would not be classified as a dirty game at all although 3 Caernarfon players were sin binned as well as one from Nant.

Next Saturday, Nant will be playing away at Pwllheli.
