Nant oedd yn pwyso drwy’r hanner cyntaf gan fynd tros y llinell deirgwaith ond y bel yn cael ei dal i fyny ar y tri thro. Yna, fel sy’n digwydd yn aml gydag un ochr yn pwyso’n barhaus, sgoriodd asgellwr yr Wyddgrug, Richard Hopkins, gais da ar ôl 43 munud o chwarae gyda’r Canolwr, Aled Ellis yn trosi.
Sgôr o 0 - 7 ar yr hanner felly.
Ar ôl parhau i bwyso ar ddechrau’r ail hanner, aeth rhif 4 cryf Nant, Med Vaughan drosodd ar yr asgell dde. Aflwyddiannus fu Llywarch gyda’r ymdrech i drosi yn union fel ag y bu ddwywaith yn yr hanner cyntaf gyda chiciau cosb o bell.
Daeth yr Wyddgrug fwy i’r gêm ar ôl y cais yma gan bwyso tipyn ond amddiffyn Nant yn dal yn gryf. Yn araf bach, gwthiwyd yr Wyddgrug yn ôl i’w hanner eu hunain fwyfwy a sgoriwyd y cais a drodd allan i ennill y gêm i Nant gan y canolwr Daniel Newcombe gyda 6 munud yn weddill. Troswyd gan Llywarch.
Mater o’r blaenwyr ei chadw’n dynn oedd hi wedyn gan lwyddo i ennill y gêm. Diddorol yn awr fydd gweld pwy fydd y gwrthwynebwyr yn y rownd nesaf.
Os bu i Langefni ennill rownd gyntaf eu gem Cwpan Gogledd Cymru heddiw, gobeithir chwarae i ffwrdd yn Llangefni'r Sadwrn nesaf yng nghymal cyntaf ail rownd y gystadleuaeth honno.
Nant were the dominant side throughout the first half and managed to cross the line three times but the ball was adjudged to be ‘held up’ on all those occasions. Then, as so often happens in such circumstances, Mold scored the first try after 43 minutes play when winger Richard Hopkins crossed for a try converted by no. 12, Aled Ellis. A score of 0 – 7 at half time then.
After continuing to press during the opening exchanges of the second half, Nant’s strong no.4, Medwyn Vaughan powered over to score a try in the right hand corner. Llywarch failed with a good conversion attempt as he had done twice with long range penalties in the first half.
Mold came more into the match after this score but the Nant defence held firm. Gradually, Mold were pegged back more and more into their own half and it was no surprise when centre, Daniel Newcombe broke the defence with an excellent angled run to score a try by the posts. Llywarch duly converted. With 6 minutes of ordinary play and 6 minutes of ‘extra time’ to be played, the Nant forwards decided to retain as much as possible of the ball in the pack and it proved successful as Nant ran out winners by 12 points to 7. It will be interesting now to see who Nant’s opponents will be in round 3.
If Llangefni managed to win their North Wales round 1 match at Colwyn Bay today, both sides have agreed to play the first leg of the second round of that competition away at Llangefni next Saturday.
