05.11.09 Ruthin vs Cobra

Following reverses in the league Ruthin were looking to start a good cup run in the first of two legs in the North Wales Cup against mid-Wales side COBRA. The game started in torrential rain but Ruthin signalled their intention with some good attacking play leading to a penalty goal put over by fly half Adam Robson after 15 minutes of play. 5 minutes later Robson, after a beautiful chip and collect across field, passed to wing Huw Parry who raced down the wing for a fine try. Ruthin were playing good attacking rugby with full back Gethin Hughes and No 8 John Meldrum scything through the COBRA midfield on occasions. However a plucky COBRA defence combined with some handling errors with the wet ball kept Ruthin out and the first half finished with Ruthin 8-0 ahead. Ruthin resumed the attack immediately after the break and after a series of scrums Hughes cut through the defence for a try which Robson converted. At 15-0 down COBRA went on the attack and for the next 20 minutes Ruthin led by skipper Joe Palmer defended well against spirited COBRA play. Eventually the pressure was too much and COBRA drove over for a fine and deserved try which they failed to convert. Ruthin went back on the attack but COBRA’s defence held again and the match finished with the score 15-5 to Ruthin. Ruthin will be pleased with this performance against a competent sideand will be looking forward to the away leg at COBRA on November 14th.
