05.11.09 North Wales Cup 1st Rd (1st leg)
Thursday 15th November
Ruthin 15-5 COBRA
COBRA will start with a 10 point deficit this Saturday (14 November) in the 2nd leg of their cup tie against Ruthin. COBRA contained Ruthin in wet conditions despite fielding an inexperienced side missing a number of regular players in the backline. COBRA lacked fluidity in their play but made up for it with a committed defensive display which frustrated their opponents.
After an even start Ruthin took the lead after 15 minutes with a penalty goal put over by their fly half Adam Robson. Midway thorough the half Robson collected his own chip ahead and sent a long pass to wing Huw Parry who broke clear for a try. The first half finished with Ruthin 8-0 ahead. Ruthin resumed the attack immediately after the break and after a series of scrums full back Gethin Hughes broke through the defence for a try which Robson converted. At 15-0 down COBRA went on the attack and for 20 minutes continually applied pressure on the Ruthin line. Eventually the pressure told as prop Andy Evans drove over for a deserved try. Outside half Rhodri Davies narrowly failed to convert leaving the final scoreline 15-5.
